Step into nostalgia on land… and sail through history at sea.

Enjoy a wonderfully nostalgic day out combining vintage motoring, estuary scenery and the living heritage of one of Britain’s most iconic working vessels.

Your day begins in historic Maldon at the vibrant Maldon Classic Car Show, where gleaming vintage motors, retro displays and passionate owners create a lively, feel good atmosphere. With time to explore the waterfront, browse the stalls and enjoy the showground, it’s the perfect start to a relaxed and memorable excursion.

In the afternoon, step aboard the magnificent Thames sailing barge Hydrogen, a vessel with a proud and fascinating past. Built in 1906 by Everard & Sons of Greenhithe, Hydrogen spent decades carrying grain, timber, bricks and general cargo along the Thames and East Coast. Like many barges, she later transitioned into leisure and heritage sailing, becoming one of the best loved survivors of the fleet. Today, she offers passengers the rare chance to experience traditional sailing aboard an authentic, beautifully preserved barge that once powered Britain’s coastal trade.

Your two hour cruise takes you down past the National Trust’s Northey Island, gliding by Heybridge Basin and the entrance to the Chelmer and Blackwater Canal. Continue past Mill Beach, with its charming stilted beach huts, and sail to within view of the privately owned Osea Island before returning to Maldon Quay. The barge then remains exclusively at our disposal for the rest of the day.

With classic cars, coastal beauty and a historic sailing barge beneath your feet, this is a truly unforgettable day out.
