In the afternoon, step aboard the magnificent Thames sailing barge Hydrogen, a vessel with a proud and fascinating past. Built in 1906 by Everard & Sons of Greenhithe, Hydrogen spent decades carrying grain, timber, bricks and general cargo along the Thames and East Coast. Like many barges, she later transitioned into leisure and heritage sailing, becoming one of the best loved survivors of the fleet. Today, she offers passengers the rare chance to experience traditional sailing aboard an authentic, beautifully preserved barge that once powered Britains coastal trade.
Your two hour cruise takes you down past the National Trusts Northey Island, gliding by Heybridge Basin and the entrance to the Chelmer and Blackwater Canal. Continue past Mill Beach, with its charming stilted beach huts, and sail to within view of the privately owned Osea Island before returning to Maldon Quay. The barge then remains exclusively at our disposal for the rest of the day.
